A passerine bird of the Emberizidae family. It is slightly larger than a sparrow, reaching a total length of about 17 cm. Sexes are different, with males having a bluish-gray head and underside. The back is reddish-brown with black vertical stripes, and the beak is pink. Females are a dull, dark yellowish-brown color. It is found only in Japan, Sakhalin, the Kuril Islands, and the southern tip of the Kamchatka Peninsula. It is not a bird with a wide distribution in Japan, breeding from the mountains on the Sea of Japan side of central Honshu to the north, and spending the winter in the mountains of southwestern Japan and Okinawa. It prefers the deep mountain forests of snowy countries, especially the bamboo thickets in deciduous broadleaf forests.
