A large moss of the Hypnaceae family (illustration). Distributed in East Asia, it is commonly found in low mountain areas throughout Japan, growing in colonies on the ground in sunny areas, on rocks, and at the base of tree trunks, forming fluffy yellow-green to pale green mats. The stems reach over 10 cm in length and produce many pinnate branches. The lower half of the leaves are broadly ovate, the upper half lanceolate, and curve sickle-shaped toward the rear. The midvein is short and unclear. The plant is dioecious, and sporophytes are quite rare. The capsule is cylindrical, curved, and inclined. The capsule teeth are arranged in two rows, one inside and one outside. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
