Anti-Federalists

In this situation, the supporters of the proposed Constitution, including A. Hamilton, J. Jay, and J. Madison, were the first to call themselves "Federalists" and pretend to be a continuation of the existing Articles of Confederation. In the end, opponents of the Constitution were forced to use the more passive term "anti-Federalists," and after fiercely fighting in the constitutional conventions of each state, they were defeated and the proposed federal constitution went into effect (1788). The Federalists succeeded in putting forward G. Washington, a bipartisan figure, as president, and the young and capable Hamilton was appointed Secretary of the Treasury, with a series of policies being enforced under his leadership.

...Their symbol is a donkey. Its lineage goes back to the Anti-Federalists, who opposed the Constitution when it was established. This group, which consisted of small farmers in the west, some large planters in the south, and debtors, nominated T. Jefferson as their candidate in the 1796 presidential election and called themselves the Republicans. In 1800, Jefferson was elected, and they controlled the government for all but two terms until 1860.
