Mass ratio

Japanese: 質量比 - しつりょうひ（英語表記）mass ratio

For each stage of a rocket, this refers to _the ratio of mass mi to _mf before and after the use of propellant, mi / mf _. The characteristic speed of each stage of a rocket is the logarithm of the mass ratio multiplied by the effective exhaust velocity. Therefore, the greater the ratio of propellant to the total mass of each stage, the greater _the characteristic speed, but on the other hand, the sum of the effective payload and the ultimately unnecessary structural mass decreases. Here, for stages other than the final stage, the stages above it are considered the payload. There is a relationship between the payload ratio α, which is the ratio of payload mass to total mass, the structural efficiency β, and the mass ratio λ, as λ ^-1 = α + β - αβ.

ロケットの各段につき，推進材の使用前後における質量m_iとm_fの比m_i/m_fをいう。ロケット各段の特性速度は質量比の対数に有効排出速度を乗じたものとなる。したがって各段全質量中推進材の占める比率が大きいほど特性速度が大きくなるが，一方，有効搭載物(ペイロード)と最終的には不要となる構造質量の和が少なくなる。ここで最終段以外についてはそれより上段をペイロードとみなす。全質量に対するペイロード質量の比であるペイロード比α，構造効率βと質量比λの間にはλ^－1＝α＋β－αβの関係がある。
