Shortbill spearfish

Japanese: フウライカジキ - ふうらいかじき（英語表記）shortbill spearfish

A marine fish of the family Marlinidae in the order Perciformes. It is also called Sanmakjiki because it resembles a Pacific saury. It is also called Sugiyama. Its English name is short bill spearfish, which comes from the fact that its beak is shorter than that of other marlins. There are five species in the genus Spearfish distributed around the world, but the Spearfish and Japanese marlins live in the waters off Japan. The Spearfish is found from various places west of Sagami Bay to Taiwan. It is the smallest of the marlin species, reaching only 2m in length and weighing about 50kg.

スズキ目マカジキ科の海産魚。サンマに似ているのでサンマカジキともいう。また，スギヤマともいわれる。英名はshort bill spearfish(くちばしの短い〈やす〉のような魚)で，くちばしが他のカジキより短いことに由来する。フウライカジキ属は全世界で5種分布するが，日本近海にはフウライカジキとマカジキがいる。フウライカジキは相模湾以西の各地から台湾にかけて分布する。カジキ類中もっとも小型で全長2m，体重50kgほどにしかならない。
