A town in the Yvelines department in northern France. Population 14,996 (1982). Formerly known as the location of the Special Military Academy of France's three services. The predecessor of this school was a boarding school established in 1686 by Madame de Maintenon for the children of poor aristocrats. After it was closed in 1793, it was used as a preschool, and in 1808, by order of Napoleon I, the Special Military Academy of Fontainebleau was moved there, and it became the Special Military Academy of Saint-Cyr. In 1944, the military academy was destroyed by war and was left in ruins, and in 1946 it was moved to Coettoquidan in Brittany. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
