A perennial plant of the lily family that grows near houses such as rice field banks from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is also planted in gardens. It is also distributed in East Asia. The stems grow upright from underground bulbs, are 1-2m tall, purple, and have white fluff when young. The leaves are numerous and broadly linear, and dark brown bulbils form in the leaf axils. In summer, 5-20 flowers appear, about 7cm in diameter. The six tepals are yellow-red with black-purple spots and curl back. There are also double-flowered varieties. It is thought that the Japanese variety was introduced from China long ago and spread there. The closely related tiger lily is slightly smaller overall and does not produce bulbils. It grows in mountain grasslands. The bulbs of both are edible. Related article: Lily (Yuri) Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
