Tiger Lily

A perennial plant of the lily family that grows near houses such as rice field banks from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and is also planted in gardens. It is also distributed in East Asia. The stems grow upright from underground bulbs, are 1-2m tall, purple, and have white fluff when young. The leaves are numerous and broadly linear, and dark brown bulbils form in the leaf axils. In summer, 5-20 flowers appear, about 7cm in diameter. The six tepals are yellow-red with black-purple spots and curl back. There are also double-flowered varieties. It is thought that the Japanese variety was introduced from China long ago and spread there. The closely related tiger lily is slightly smaller overall and does not produce bulbils. It grows in mountain grasslands. The bulbs of both are edible.

北海道〜九州の田の畔など人家近くにはえ，庭園にも植えられるユリ科の多年草。東アジアにも分布。茎は地下の鱗茎から直立し，高さ１〜2m，紫色を帯び，若いときは白綿毛がある。葉は多数つき，広線形で，葉腋に濃褐色のむかごができる。花は夏，５〜20個つき，径7cm内外。６枚の花被片は黄赤色で，黒紫色の斑(ふ)があり，そり返る。八重咲品種などもある。日本のものは古く中国から渡来して広がったとも考えられている。近縁のコオニユリは全体にやや小さく，むかごができない。山地の草原にはえる。ともに鱗茎は食用となる。
