A plateau-like basin in the southern part of the Republic of South Africa, in southern Africa. It lies at an altitude of 600-2100m and covers an area of approximately 80,000 km2. As the name Karoo means "dry" in the Koi Koin language, it has a dry climate (annual precipitation of 100-300mm), but it is used as sheep pastures and, in areas with well-equipped irrigation systems, as farmland for citrus fruits and other crops.
