This revolutionary large ship was launched in England in 1858, and no larger ships were built for the next 50 years. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-59), it was 211m long, 25.2m wide, and had a gross tonnage of 18,915 tons. It was equipped with a pair of paddle wheels on each side near the center of the hull and a screw propeller at the stern for propulsion, and its six masts were mainly rigged with foresails. It was a commercial failure due to high maintenance costs, and was used only for laying a transatlantic cable before being dismantled in 1888.
