Idol. (1) An image made to represent a god and to be an object of faith and worship. Idolatry is forbidden in the Bible, and all pagan gods were fiercely attacked by the prophets as idols. (2) A term used by F. Bacon. He listed four idols as preconceptions that must be eliminated in order to observe experience accurately: the idol of the tribe, the idol of the cave, the idol of the marketplace, and the idol of the theater.
