A port city in western Angola, southwestern Africa. It faces Lobito Bay on the Atlantic Ocean. Population: 59,528 (1970 census), 134,600 (2002 estimate). While Benguela, located immediately to the south, has been a port town since ancient times, Lobito was merely a small fishing village until the early 20th century. In 1903, British man Robert Williams began construction of a railway to Lobito to ship mineral products from Katanga in the Belgian Congo (now Katanga Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo), which was completed in 1927 (Benguela Railway). Since then, it has developed rapidly, becoming an export port for mineral products as well as coffee, sisal, cotton, etc. [Nobuyuki Hashimoto] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
