King of Sparta (Agid family). Date of birth and death unknown. Reigned c. 519-490 BC. Around 519 BC, he allied Plataea with Athens, trying to drive a wedge between Athens and Thebes, expelled the tyrant Hippias from Athens in 510 BC, and in 508 BC tried to prevent Cleisthenes from gaining power in Athens but failed. Around 494 BC, he destroyed the Argive army in the Battle of Sepeia, and around 491 BC, he imposed sanctions on Aegina, which had declared its submission to the Persian Empire, but in the process, he used a trick to expel Demaratus, a fellow king of the Euryphon family with whom he had long been in conflict, and went into exile when this was discovered.
