King of Sparta. Reigned 235-219 BC. He married Agiatis, widow of Agis IV, and inherited the ideal of restoring the nation to power by restoring the Lycurgus system. He fought against the Achaean League (228 BC) and became the most powerful man in the country. In the winter of 227-226 BC, in order to restore the Lycurgus system, he canceled all debts, divided the land of the country into 4,000 districts, and incorporated some of the perioikoi into citizens, increasing the number of Spartan citizens from about 700 to 4,000.
