Fog formed when moist warm air moves over the cold earth's surface and the air layer at ground level cools. There are sea fog, monsoon fog caused by seasonal winds, and tropical air mass fog formed in hot and humid tropical marine air masses. Sea fog, which often occurs in the Yellow Sea, Kushiro region of Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands, and the Aleutian Islands from June to August, is a type of advection fog that appears when the wind is from the south, and is denser and lasts longer when the air pressure is dropping. In the Atlantic Ocean, the fog on the Grand Bank off the coast of Newfoundland, where the Labrador Current flows, is famous, and occurs frequently from late spring to early summer.

湿った暖気が冷たい地表面上を移行するとき，接地気層が冷却されてできる霧。海霧，季節風に伴うモンスーン霧，高温多湿な海洋性熱帯気団の中にできる熱帯気団霧などがある。6月から 8月にかけて黄海，北海道釧路地方や千島，アリューシャン方面によく発生する海霧は移流霧の一種で，南寄りの風のときに現れ，気圧が降下しているときは濃度が高く，継続時間も長い。大西洋ではラブラドル寒流が流れているニューファンドランド沖のグランド堆の霧が有名で，晩春から初夏にかけて発生頻度が高い。
