Cleome - Cleome

Japanese: クレオメ - くれおめ
Cleome - Cleome

A general term for the genus Capranaceae (APG classification: Capranaceae). About 150 species are known from the tropics to subtropics, and C. viscosa L. is found in Okinawa. The commonly cultivated species is Tarenaya hassleriana (Chodat) Iltis ( Cleome spinosa L.), an annual plant native to tropical America. The stems are single or grow in pairs or triplicates, and reach a height of about 1 meter. The leaves are palmately compound with 4 to 7 leaflets and have thorns at the base. From June to September, numerous flowers bloom in a cluster at the top of the stem. The flowers have four petals, the lower half of which is thin and linear, and the flowers are pale pink, purple pink, or white. The stamens are the same color as the flower, and are characterized by sticking out from the flower for 5 to 7.5 centimeters. There is one pistil, which after flowering turns into a long, thin pod about 15 cm long, which grows on a long stalk and spreads in all directions, and is enjoyed along with the flowers. Seeds are sown in April and May, but they are very hardy and can grow in any soil type, even if the seeds are scattered the following year.
