Dairy product manufacturer. Formerly Daigomi Limited Partnership, established in 1916, established Lacto in 1917. Launched lactobacillus beverage "Calpis" in 1919. Changed name to Calpis Manufacturing in 1923. Dissolved under the Business Reconstruction and Adjustment Act in 1948, established as Calpis Food Industry. For a long time, Calpis was a single-item company, but after launching "Calpis Soda" in 1973, it began to manufacture and sell various beverages such as oolong tea and fruit drinks. As it diversified its beverage products, it also started to operate in food, alcohol, restaurants, and sports. In 1990, it expanded its beverage business by forming a business alliance with Ajinomoto. In 1997, it changed its name to the current one. In 2007, it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Ajinomoto. In 2012, it became a subsidiary of Asahi Group Holdings (→Asahi Breweries), which acquired shares from Ajinomoto. In 2013, the domestic beverage business and sales division were transferred to Asahi Soft Drinks. In 2016, the functional food and feed business was transferred to Asahi Calpis Wellness, and Calpis Foods Service, a wholly owned subsidiary of Calpis, changed its name to Calpis and took over the former Calpis' domestic beverage manufacturing business and dairy product business.

乳製品メーカー。1916年設立の醍醐味合資会社を前身として，1917年にラクトーを設立。1919年に乳酸菌飲料「カルピス」を発売。1923年社名をカルピス製造に改称。1948年企業再建整備法により旧社を解散し，新たにカルピス食品工業として設立。長期間単品経営を行なってきたが，1973年に「カルピスソーダ」を発売後，ウーロン茶，フルーツ飲料などの各種飲料を製造販売。飲料品目の多様化とともに食品，酒類，外食，スポーツなどの事業にも乗り出した。1990年飲料事業の拡大をはかり味の素と業務提携。1997年現社名に変更。2007年，味の素の完全子会社となる。2012年，味の素から株式を取得したアサヒグループホールディングス（→アサヒビール）の傘下に入る。2013年国内飲料事業および営業部門をアサヒ飲料に移管。2016年機能性食品・飼料事業をアサヒカルピスウェルネスに移管するとともに，カルピスの完全子会社であるカルピスフーズサービスの商号をカルピスに変更し，旧カルピスの国内飲料製造事業および乳製品事業を承継させた。
