Nasu no Kuni no Miyatsuko Monument - Nasu no Kuni no Miyatsuko Monument
<br /> An ancient monument in Yutsukami, Otawara City, Tochigi Prefecture. It is enshrined as a deity in the grounds of Kasaishi Shrine on a terrace on the right bank of the Naka River. Made of granite and 148 cm high, it is called Kasaishi because a cap-shaped stone is placed on top of the stone monument with an inscription. It was erected by Oshimaro, who is thought to be the son of Nasu no Ataitei , who was the Nasu kuni no miyatsuko and died in 700 (the 4th year of Emperor Mommu's reign), to commemorate his achievements. The characters, 19 characters each in 8 lines, are in a style of Chinese Six Dynasties style. The monument was discovered in the Edo period, and the feudal lord Mito Mitsukuni ordered the founding of Kasaishi Shrine and the protection of the monument, and it was designated a national treasure in 1952 (Showa 27). It is counted as one of the three oldest monuments in Japan, along with the Tagajo Monument (Miyagi Prefecture) and the Tago Monument ( Gunma Prefecture). From JR Tohoku Shinkansen or other Nasushiobara Station, take the Otawara City Bus to the "Kasaishi Jinja-mae" stop, and walk for a short distance.
