A city in the center of the Tsukushi Plain in southern Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889. During the Edo period, the city center flourished as a castle town of the Arima clan, which had a fief of 210,000 koku, and was also a military city before the war. The city is served by the Kyushu Shinkansen, Kagoshima Main Line, Kyudai Main Line, Nishitetsu Tenjin Omuta Line and Amagi Line, and the Kyushu Expressway. There is a Bridgestone factory established in 1931 that produces industrial and household rubber products, mainly tires. In 1984, it was designated a technopolis along with Tosu City in Saga Prefecture, and currently construction of a high-tech park is underway in the north. Rice, flowers, and vegetables are produced in the rural areas. Kurume Kasuri, lacquerware made from woven bamboo, and Fuyu persimmons are local specialties. There are famous places such as Kora Taisha Shrine, Suitengu Shrine, and Bairinji Temple, as well as the Ishibashi Cultural Center, the World Azalea Center, and a Self-Defense Force base. In February 2005, Tanushimaru Town in Ukiha County, Kitano Town in Mii County, Jojima Town in Mizuma County, and Mizuma Town were incorporated. The area is 229.96 km2 . 福岡県南部,筑紫(つくし)平野の中部の市。1889年市制。中心市街は江戸時代の有馬氏21万石の城下町として栄え,戦前は軍都でもあった。九州新幹線,鹿児島本線,久大本線,西鉄天神大牟田(おおむた)線・甘木線,九州自動車道が通じる。1931年設立のブリヂストンの工場があり,タイヤを中心に工業用・家庭用ゴム製品を生産。1984年佐賀県鳥栖市とともにテクノポリス指定を受け,現在は北部にハイテクパークの建設が進む。農村部では米,花卉(かき),野菜を産する。久留米絣(がすり),竹を編んで素地とした籃胎(らんたい)漆器,富有柿は特産。高良(こうら)大社,水天宮,梅林寺などの名所,石橋文化センター,世界つつじセンター,自衛隊基地がある。2005年2月浮羽郡田主丸町,三井郡北野町,三潴郡城島町,三潴町を編入。229.96km2。30万2402人(2010)。
