Year of death: Kenpo 5 (1217) Year of birth: Around Eiji 1 (1141) A court lady poet from the late Heian and early Kamakura periods. Her father was Yorimasa, the Ukyo Gon-no-daifu of the Settsu Genji clan, and her mother was the granddaughter of Minamoto no Nariyari. She first served Emperor Nijō, and later served Emperor Gotoba's Empress Ninshi (Gishūmon'in), and was active as a poet for a long period of time, appearing in such works as the Shōji Hatsudo Hyakushu (Shoji First One Hundred Poems) in 1200 and the Sengohyakuban Utaawase (Sengohyakuban Utaawase) in 1203. Her most famous work is "My sleeves are invisible at low tide, the people on the rocks offshore do not know, and they have no time to dry," which was included in the Hyakunin Isshu. After this poem, she was also called "Sanuki, the rocks offshore."
