...(1) Friction is proportional to the force applied perpendicular to the contact surface and is independent of the apparent contact area between the objects, (2) kinetic friction is independent of the sliding speed, (3) static friction is generally greater than kinetic friction. Of these, (1) and (2) were announced by Guillaume Amontons (1663-1705) of France in 1669 and later confirmed by C. Coulomb, and are therefore known as Amonton's law or Coulomb's law. (1) was also used in the explanation of mechanics above, but these are empirical laws obtained for friction on surfaces that are not lubricated, and do not always hold strictly. ...
