Astronomical chronology

Japanese: 天文年代学 - てんもんねんだいがく（英語表記）astronomical chronology

A science that uses astronomical phenomena to determine the dates of historical events that occurred in the past. In many cases, the time of a historical event can be determined from historical documents, but there are also cases where the fact of an event is clear but the date is unknown, and this tendency is particularly noticeable the further back in time one goes. Furthermore, as historical documents get older, even if the time of an event is recorded, there is a possibility that it is an error, and it becomes necessary to determine the correct date. In some cases, astronomical phenomena can be used for these purposes.

天文現象を利用して過去に起こった歴史的事件の年月日を決定する学問をいう。歴史的事件は史料によって生起のときを知ることができる場合が多いが，生起の事実は明らかなのにその年月日が不明の場合もあって，とくに古代にさかのぼるほどこの傾向は顕著となる。また史料が古くなれば，たとえ生起のときが記されていても錯誤である可能性が生じ，正しい年代を確定することが必要となる。これらの目的に天文現象を利用できる場合がある。
