A sénéchal was a royal official in the provinces of medieval France (northern and eastern parts of the country). Officials in the southern and western territories of the country were called sénéchals. They represented the king's rights in the provinces (administrative), controlled the lower royal courts (judicial), and maintained local law and order (military). After the 16th century, they lost their actual status and were replaced by the lieutenant, but each baiage, which was its district, became a unit for electing representatives of each estate.
