Born: February 4, 1865 in Geneva Died: April 10, 1947. Geneva. Swiss linguist. Studied under Saussure and later succeeded him as professor at the University of Geneva. Founder of the Geneva School. Following Saussure's distinction between langue and parole, he focused on the affective aspects of language use and developed stylistics. Together with A. Sessuet, he edited and published Saussure's lectures after his death as Cours de linguistique générale (1916).
