An ancient Greek aerophone. A double-reed instrument consisting of two pipes. It is said to have originated in Asia Minor, and is thought to have had a high-pitched, piercing tone similar to that of today's bagpipes. While the cithara, a stringed instrument, was used primarily to accompany epic and lyric poetry as a symbol of the classical clarity of the sun god Apollo, the aulos, with its passionate tone, was used to accompany choruses in the Dionysian festivals and the tragedies that developed from them. The Pythian Nomos (586 BC) composed by the aulos player Sacadas is known as the oldest known example of program music.
