Around 1350 - 1415 A Byzantine man of letters. He converted to Catholicism after studying under Cydones Demetrios, who introduced Thomas theology to the Byzantine world. He was sent to Western Europe several times by Emperor Manuel II as an envoy to defend against the Ottoman Turks. In 1397 he was invited to Florence by Coluccio Salutati, a promoter of the Renaissance, to teach Greek, and among his students were such humanists as Bruni, Poggi, and Filelfo.
