Japanese: ワークショップ - わーくしょっぷ（英語表記）workshop

From the meaning of a workplace or research meeting, it has come to mean collaborative work by all participants beyond the traditional framework of performers and viewers in art and theater. In Japanese art museums, it spread from the late 1970s as an attempt to have children experience creating together with artists and curators. In the 1990s, it became popular as part of the museum's educational outreach activities, and furthermore, with the implementation of "integrated learning" (integrated learning time) in elementary and junior high schools in 2002, it is being actively adopted by local art museums as a replacement for the cut in the number of hours for "art and craft" classes. In addition to creative experiences such as "painting classes," various attempts such as having children plan exhibitions are spreading. However, at present, there are not many art museums that have specialized curators called outreach curators or educators, as in Europe and the United States. In order to develop it as a part of the museum's proactive service to the local community in the future, sufficient environmental improvements are required.

Workshop

In English, it means a workplace or a workshop. It is a two-way, participatory, experiential group learning where participants do not simply listen to a lecture by a lecturer, but instead take part in discussions and engage in physical experiences. Since the late 1980s, it has become popular in Japan in the arts, such as theater, dance, and visual arts, as a shift away from passive learning. For example, Hirata Oriza, a playwright and director who presides over the Seinendan Theatre Company, has held many workshops around Japan since the 1990s to teach his own acting method in an experiential way. Workshops are also held in a variety of fields, including school education, corporate training, and community development involving residents, in addition to the arts.

仕事場や研究集会といった意味から、美術や演劇などで表現者や鑑賞者といった従来の枠組みを超えた参加者全員による共同作業を指すようになった。日本の美術館では1970年代後半から、アーティストや学芸員(キュレーター)と一緒に子供たちが創作を体験する試みとして広がった。90年代に、美術館の教育普及活動の一環として盛んになり、さらに2002年度に実施された小中学校の「総合学習」(総合的な学習の時間)により、「図画工作」の時間数が切りつめられた代わりとして、積極的に地域の美術館で採用されつつある。「絵画教室」といった創作体験だけでなく、子供たちに展覧会を企画させるなど様々な試みが広がっている。しかし現状では、欧米のように普及学芸員やエデュケーターと呼ばれる専門学芸員を置く美術館は多くない。今後、美術館の地域社会への積極的なサービスの一環として発展させるためにも、十分な環境整備が求められている。

ワークショップ

英語では、仕事場、作業場、の意味。講師の話を参加者が一方的に聞くのではなく、参加者自身が討論に加わったり、体を使って体験したりするなど、参加体験型、双方向性のグループ学習。受け身型学習からの転換・脱皮として、日本でも1980年代後半以降、演劇、ダンス、美術などの芸術分野で盛んに行われるようになった。例えば、劇団青年団を主宰する劇作家で演出家の平田オリザは90年代以降、日本各地で、彼自身の演技メソッドを体験型で教えるワークショップを数多く行ってきた。ワークショップは、芸術分野以外にも、学校教育、企業研修、住民参加の街づくりなど、多彩な領域で行われている。
