It is an animal of the order Artiodactyla and family Bovidae. It is found in Africa from Sudan and Ethiopia to the Eastern, Western and Northern Cape provinces of the Republic of South Africa, and lives in grasslands near water. It is large, with a head and body length of 2 to 3 meters, a tail length of 1 meter, shoulder height of 1.5 meters, and a weight of 700 to 1000 kilograms. Both sexes have horns, which are extremely wide at the base and almost close to each other at the forehead, and become thinner and sharper toward the tip, curving inward upward. The body color is dark brown or black, and there is little body hair, especially in older animals. The ears are large and drooping, with long hair on the edges. They live in herds of several to several hundred individuals, resting in grassy areas during the day and active from dusk to night. They are herbivorous and prefer to bathe in mud. The gestation period is 340 days, and they give birth to one child at a time. Around 1993, foot-and-mouth disease, an infectious disease for cloven-hoofed animals, broke out in Kruger National Park in South Africa and its surrounding areas, creating a critical situation. As a result, plans were made to gather healthy individuals from all over the world to create a new herd, with Gunma Safari Park from Japan providing 25 animals, which were released into the sanctuary along with 75 from other countries. This activity can be considered a new form of international contribution. One subspecies of this species , S. c. nanus, is sometimes referred to as a separate species, the red buffalo.
