Takayuki Ikebe - Name Takayuki

Christian social worker. Born into a samurai family in the Sendai domain, he was baptized in 1886 (Meiji 19). After working on the development of missionary work in Hokkaido, he graduated from Aoyama Gakuin Theology School in 1899. He studied theology and sociology at Boston University from 1902 (Meiji 35). He then visited social work in Europe and the United States, which was in its early stages of establishment. From 1908, as a consultant to the Ministry of the Interior, he contributed to the establishment and development of social work in Japan. From 1918 (Taisho 7), he served as a lecturer (later a professor) at Japan Women's University (until 1944), and also lectured on social work at several universities, including Doshisha University, training many social work workers. His books include "Outline of Social Work" (1923) and "History of Social Work in Japanese Christianity" (1931).

キリスト教社会事業家。仙台藩士の家に生まれ、1886年(明治19)受洗。北海道伝道開拓に従事したのち1899年青山学院神学部を卒業。1902年(明治35)からボストン大学で神学、社会学を学ぶ。ついで成立期にあった欧米の社会事業を視察。1908年以降内務省嘱託として、日本の社会事業の成立、進展に貢献した。1918年(大正7)以後日本女子大学講師(のち教授)を務めた(1944年まで)ほか、同志社大学など数校で社会事業を講じ、社会事業従事者多数を育成した。著書に『社会事業綱要』(1923)、『日本基督(キリスト)教社会事業史』(1931)などがある。
