African National Congress. ANC. A black liberation organization in South Africa. Founded in 1912 as the South African Native National Congress, it was renamed in 1923. It led a movement calling for the complete abolition of discrimination against the apartheid (racial segregation) policy of the South African government. It was outlawed in the Sharpeville massacre of 1960, but was legalized in 1990 and its leader, Nelson Mandela, was released from prison. By June 1991, the discriminatory legal system had been completely abolished, and in the April 1994 Constituent Assembly elections, it won a majority of seats and formed the core of the National Unity Government under President Mandela. Since 1993, T. Mbeki has been its chairman.
