Jo Tokuritsu
1877‐1968
Chinese educator and revolutionary. Son of a farmer from Changsha, Hunan Province. A member of the China Tongminghui, he became a teacher at Changsha First Normal School after the Xinhai Revolution. He was Mao Zedong's teacher. At the age of 43, he joined the Association of Workers and Frugal Students in France as a student, and after the split between the Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalist Party, he joined the Chinese Communist Party and participated in the August 1st Nanchang Uprising. After the defeat, he studied at Sun Yat-sen University in Moscow. After returning to China, he became head of the Ministry of Education of the Chinese Soviet Republic in Ruijin, participated in the Long March, and engaged in educational propaganda work in Yan'an. He became a Central Committee member in 1945, and after the founding of the People's Congress, he became a Standing Committee member. He died of illness in Beijing. [Kojima Shinji]
