A frisson instrument indispensable in Latin American music. Also called the guiro, it is generally made by hollowing out a gourd with no neck and making notches in the tough outer skin. The player rubs a thin stick back and forth along the notches, producing a sharp sound that repeats a certain rhythmic pattern. This form of sound production has ancient origins, and the notched stones and bones used in the early Stone Age are thought to be similar sound-producing tools. It is also used in modern compositions such as Stravinsky's ballet "The Rite of Spring" and Ravel's opera "The Child and the Spells".
