A commercial city and the capital of the county of Kent in the southeast of England, the United Kingdom. The name is interpreted as meaning "Maiden's Stone." Population 139,000 (1993). Located in the middle reaches of the Medway River, it is the center of a fertile agricultural region where grain and hops are traded, and there are also industries such as paper, brewing, printing, and agricultural machinery. There are remains of a Roman garrison, but in the Middle Ages it belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury and was the site of the archbishop's residence until the Reformation. After the Flemish settlement in 1567, it prospered through wool and linen industries, but gradually the focus shifted to paper. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
