A spectacle in which women wrestle. It was first performed as a spectacle in Edo in 1745 (Enkyo 2), and during the Meiwa era (1764-1772) matches between blind men and female sumo wrestlers became popular and well-received, but was banned as it was considered degrading to blind people. Later, during the Kaei era (1848-1854), women's sumo was organized again in Nagoya and toured around the country, becoming popular as men would sometimes join in, but in 1872 (Meiji 5) it was banned as being undesirable in terms of public morals, and now it is only seen at festivals in the Kyushu region.
