An island about 100 km off the coast of the Florida peninsula. One of the main islands of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, it has an area of 1,114 km2 and a population of 40,898 (1990). The Bahamas has been in the limelight as a financial and processing trade center in the Caribbean due to its tax haven policy, but its center is the Freeport, which was established on the island in 1955. Since then, large-scale oil refineries and various processing industries have developed, and the population has tripled. In 1977, an oil berth capable of docking the world's largest tankers was built offshore. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
