...The brave and belligerent spirit born from this tradition of warfare has survived into modern times, and many young people have left their hometowns to seek wealth and advancement in the military due to the poverty of the land. Dumas's "The Three Musketeers" depicts these Gascon young men as the protagonists, and their adventurous, boastful, and somewhat boastful but friendly disposition (Gascon type). The Pyrenees are divided into four regions: Basque, Béarn, Bigorre, and Comminges from the west.
