A perennial grass of the Poaceae family (APG classification: Poaceae). The culms are clumpy and 30-70 cm tall. The plant is inverted. From August to October, the culms produce many branched panicles with sparse spikelets. There are yellow glands above the inflorescence branches. The spikelets are lanceolate and 6-10 mm long. It is found on wastelands and roadsides, and is distributed from Honshu to Kyushu, Korea, China, and the Himalayas. The closely related weeping lovegrass (Chinese weeping lovegrass), which is planted to stabilize and green slopes on road cuts, is a perennial herb native to South Africa, with deeply drooping culms and leaves.
