A shallow area of the ocean floor southeast of Newfoundland, eastern Canada. It is separated from Nova Scotia to the west by the Laurentian Channel, which connects to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and to the east, at a depth of 1,300 m, is Flemish Cap. At its southern end, the Gulf Stream, which flows north along the east coast of North America, and the Labrador Current, which flows south through the Labrador Sea, collide, making it a world-famous fishing ground. It is composed of Tertiary deposits deposited on the basement of the Appalachian Palaeozoic formations found in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.
