In the narrow sense, it refers to pagodas or tower-like Buddhist buildings in Southeast Asia, such as the payas and zedis of Myanmar (Burma), and the Phra Prang and Phra Chedi of Thailand. The form evolved from the Indian stupa, in which square, polygonal, or circular bases are stacked one on top of the other while successively reducing in size, and a pyramidal or truncated conical bowl is built on top of that, and a tall spire is then built on top of that. Good examples are the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon and Wat Arun in Bangkok. In the broad sense, it refers to tall tower-like religious buildings in the Orient. In addition to the above, it includes various pagodas such as the dagabas of Sri Lanka, the multi-storey pagodas and lamas' pagodas of China, the three-storey pagodas, five-storey pagodas and pagodas of Japan, and sometimes the shikaras and gopurams of Hinduism and Jainism in India. However, it does not include Islamic minarets or tombs. (→ Towers) Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
