Among the Italian folk songs known worldwide are those from Naples. Beautiful melodies with a tropical feel, such as "O Sole Mio" and "Santa Lucia," are widely loved, but most of them were created after the second half of the 19th century, and the writers of the lyrics and composers are known, so it is difficult to call them folk music in the strict sense. Italian folk music, which is not generally known, is extremely diverse, with different characteristics depending on the region.

Well-known folk songs such as "Santa Lucia" and "O Sole Mio" are also canzone napoletana (Neapolitan songs), and many Neapolitan songs were born from the custom of citizens dedicating their own songs to the festival held every year on September 7th at the Piedigrotta Church in Naples. This tradition was passed down in a different form in the song festival that began in 1951 in the tourist town of San Remo in northern Italy, and "Volare," which won the 8th song festival in 1958, became a worldwide hit, and new canzones became popular around the world. …

The rhythm of the habanera is 2/4 and has a big jump on the first beat, and this rhythmic feeling was introduced to Argentina and gave birth to the tango, and in Italy it was used in Neapolitan folk songs such as O Sole Mio, and in Japan it was used in Hot Spring Town Elegy (1948, composed by Masao Koga) and Lone Pine Tree of Farewell (1950)....
