A city in the mid-west of Okayama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Most of the city is in the Kibi Plateau, and the city center (formerly known as Matsuyama) is on the left bank of the Takahashi River midstream. During the Edo period, it developed as a castle town of Matsuyama Castle on Gagyu Mountain. The Hakubi Line runs through the city. It is the central city of the Kibi Plateau and is a thriving commercial center. Many people commute to the southern industrial area of ​​the prefecture. The city is also working to develop into a university and cultural city, such as by inviting Kibi International University. Tobacco and matsutake mushrooms are produced, and peonies are cultivated. Matsuyama Castle is the highest mountain castle in Japan with a surviving castle tower (460m above sea level), and is a nationally designated historic site. It also has the Raikyu-ji Temple Garden, a nationally designated Place of Scenic Beauty, and the samurai residences in the old castle town have been developed. In October 2004, it incorporated Arikan Town in Kamibo District, Nariwa Town, Kawakami Town, and Bitchu Town in Kawakami District. 546.99km2 . 34,963 people (2010).
