...The first to use the term and to establish the genre was Mateo Aleman's "The Life of Guzman de Alfarache the Rogue" (Part 1, 1599, Part 2, 1604), and the pinnacle of this genre was Quevedo's "The Life of Don Pablos, the Storyteller" (1626). Other masterpieces produced by the genre included Lopez de Úbeda's "Justina the Vixen," Vicente Espinel's "The Life of Marcos de Obregón the Squire," and the anonymous "Estebanillo González," but in the second half of the 17th century, the genre fell into the realm of depicting manners. However, the "rogue novel" was translated and introduced to European countries early on, and its influence is immeasurable. ...
