Grand Guignol

Japanese: グラン･ギニョル（英語表記）Grand‐Guignol

Founded in 1895 in Montmartre, Paris, this theater was originally called the Salon. From 1897 onwards, Oscar Méténier, Max Maurey and others staged a succession of short plays that mixed terror with extraordinary humour, drawing large audiences, and the theater gained a reputation for its horror stories in particular. Thanks to the efforts of André de Lorde, a resident playwright known as the "Prince de la Terreur" and known for his adaptations of E. A. Poe's novels, the expression "it's like the Grand Guignol" came to be used to refer to over-the-top melodramas and horror stories in general, and today this term is used to refer to such a theatrical genre.

1895年，パリのモンマルトルに創設された劇場。最初はサロン座と称した。97年以降，メテニエOscar Méténier，モレーMax Maureyらによって，恐怖感と並はずれた陽気な笑いの混交した短編戯曲が次々と上演されて客足を引き，特に恐怖物で評判が上がった。E.A.ポーの小説翻案で売り，通称〈恐怖の王Prince de la Terreur〉といわれた座付作者アンドレ･ド･ロルドAndré de Lordeらの活躍で，度を越したメロドラマや恐怖物の芝居一般を指して〈まるでグラン･ギニョルだ〉という表現まで使われるようになり，今日では，この語はそのような演劇ジャンルの名称として用いられる。
