Teaching material

Japanese: 教材 - きょうざい（英語表記）teaching material

Materials prepared according to the needs of teaching and learning. Content materials that make up the curriculum are selected and organized according to the specific goals of education, the level of development and interest of the learners, and the system of the educational content itself. Traditionally, knowledge materials were organized mainly in textbooks, but life education and problem-solving learning require materials to be used as teaching materials from abundant cultural heritage, natural and social environments, and the learners' practical experiences and work processes. Of course, knowledge materials are also updated from time to time in response to the progress of the times and academic culture. The School Education Act lists "textbooks," "books other than textbooks," and "other teaching materials" as teaching materials. Details of these "other teaching materials" are provided in the "Teaching Materials Standards" presented in a notice from the Director-General of the Elementary and Secondary Education Bureau of the Ministry of Education in 1967.

教授，学習の必要に従い用意される材料。教育課程を構成する内容的素材で，教育の具体的目標，学習者の発達や興味の水準，教育内容そのものの系統に応じ選択，編成される。伝統的には知識教材が教科書中心に編成されたが，生活教育や問題解決学習では豊富な文化遺産，自然や社会環境のなかに，また学習者の実践的経験や作業過程においても，教材化する資料が求められる。もちろん，知識教材も時代の進展，学術文化の進歩に応じ，随時更新を重ねる。学校教育法では教材として「教科用図書」「教科用図書以外の図書」「その他の教材」をあげている。この「その他の教材」については 1967年の文部省初等中等教育局長の通達で提示された「教材基準」に詳細に示されている。
