Katauta - Katauta

Generally, it is one of the waka poetry styles, and refers to a three-line poem with five-seven-seven syllables. However, in the Kojiki, it is used as the name of the singing style of the last song in a set of songs. For example, the last song in a set of songs is referred to as "Hokiuta" along with the title of the song, such as "Thy child, when will I finally know, the wild geese are laying eggs, this is a half-verse of the Hokiuta" (Article on Emperor Nintoku). However, there is no consensus on the specific way to sing it.

Furthermore, this three-line form of poem appears nine times in the Kojiki and three times in the Nihon Shoki, and is also found in Kagura songs from the Heian period, so it is thought to have originally been a form of folk song.

一般には、和歌の歌体の一つで、音数が五・七・七という三句形式の歌をいう。しかし『古事記』では、一組の歌謡のうち最後の歌謡の歌い方の名称として用いている。たとえば、数首の歌謡の最後のものを、「汝(な)が御子(みこ)や　遂(つひ)に知らむと　雁(かり)は卵産(こむ)らし　此(こ)は本岐歌(ほきうた)の片歌なり」（仁徳(にんとく)天皇条）のように、歌曲名「本岐歌」とともに称している。ただ、歌い方についての具体的なことについては定説がない。

　なお、この三句形式の歌は『古事記』に9首、『日本書紀』に3首みられるほか、平安時代の神楽歌(かぐらうた)にもみいだされ、本来、歌謡の形式であったと考えられる。
