Crabbe, George
Born: 24 December 1754, Aldeburgh, Suffolk
[Died] February 3, 1832. Trowbridge, Wiltshire. British poet. In 1775, he practiced medicine in his hometown. In 1780, he moved to London and became acquainted with E. Burke, where he published The Library (1781). In 1781, he was ordained and became the curate of Aldeburgh. From 1782 to 1785, he served as the chaplain of Beaver Castle, the residence of the Duke of Rutland, during which time he published The Village (83), which was reviewed by Burke and S. Johnson and was well received. After that, he moved around to various places as a clergyman, but in 1807, he broke his long silence by publishing The Parish Register. He then wrote The Borough (1810), Tales in Verse (12), Tales of the Hall (19), and other narrative poems that realistically depicted the lives of poor peasants that he had observed as a clergyman, and became one of the poets who decorated the transitional period at the end of the 18th century.
