Parulidae; New World Warblers

Japanese: アメリカムシクイ(英語表記)Parulidae; new world warblers
Parulidae; New World Warblers
A general term for birds of the family Parulidae in the order Passeriformes. Although they are called warblers, they are not closely related to the warblers found in Eurasia and Africa or the Australian warblers. There are about 120 species, and they are representative small birds found in North America, Central America, South America, and the West Indies. They are 10 to 15 cm long. Most of their plumage is yellowish, but some are brightly colored, such as red, black, and white. Most of the birds that breed in North America have a dull yellowish plumage overall, while males have bright summer plumage (→ plumage) with yellow and black feathers, and some have winter plumage similar to females. Most of them migrate to Central and South America to spend the winter. Among the resident species found in South America, there are birds of both sexes that have bright plumage all year round. They live in a variety of forests, from sparse to densely forested, and most species are insectivorous, but some prefer to eat seeds, fruit, and nectar.
