This drum is placed on top of a 16-meter-tall tower that is built at a sumo ring. In the Edo period, there were no news media, so the drums were used to announce sumo events to the town. Also, to announce the time when the wrestlers were to enter the ring, the first drum, the second drum, and so on were beaten early in the morning, according to rank. However, nowadays, the drums are beaten in different ways, such as "Yosedaiko" to call in the audience, and "Hanedaiko" when the day's performance is over.
