A pass located in the center of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture, between Izu City and Kawazu Town in Kamo County. It is 840 meters above sea level. It forms the border between northern and southern Izu, and is the watershed between the Kano River and the Kawazu River. National Route 414, commonly known as the Shimoda Highway, crosses it. The former Amagi Pass road passed through Nihonsugi Pass, west of the current pass. The 446-meter-long old Amagi Tunnel was opened in 1905 (Meiji 38), and the 800-meter-long new Amagi Tunnel was opened as a toll road in 1970 (Showa 45) (it became free in 2000). The old Amagi Tunnel and Amagi Pass were written about in travel writings by Shimazaki Toson and Tayama Katai, and especially appear in Kawabata Yasunari's "The Dancing Girl of Izu." The old road has been turned into a tourist promenade called the "Dancing Girl Course." To the east from the pass, you can pass through Haccho Pond and head to the Amagi mountain range, while to the west, you can follow the ridgeline from Nekkoshi Volcano to Nishina Pass. The area around the pass has been designated the "Showa Forest Amagi Mountain Natural Recreational Forest," and the development of facilities is underway.
