A street in the City of London, England. According to the 18th century writer Dr. Johnson, many poor writers lived here and wrote miscellaneous articles or worked as editors to make a living. From there, the word came to mean "a hackneyed writer" or "miscellaneous writing." The word was still in use in the 19th century, when the street's name changed to Milton Street, and novelist Gissing gave the title "New Grub Street Now" to one of his works.
