...Blind musician. Founder of the Edo Ikuta school of koto music. His hometown name was Yanoichi, Yaeichi, or Konoichi. He is said to have been the second son of a chief retainer of the Zeze clan in Omi. He was a disciple of Kurahashi Kengyo in Kyoto. He was summoned by Maeda Toshiyuki of the Toyama clan and recognized by the shamisen expert Shimada Kengyo. He taught Ikuta school koto music in Toyama and at his Edo residence. He was appointed as a Kengyo in 1736 (Genbun 1). He was in conflict with Yasumura Kengyo in Kyoto, who was said to be a junior disciple of Kurahashi, and composed many new kumiuta pieces. In particular, "Miya no Uguisu" (The Nightingale of the Palace) is thought to have been written in competition with Yasumura's "Hien no Kyoku" (The Flying Swallow's Song), and influenced Mitsuzaki Kengyo's later "Akikaze no Kyoku" (Autumn Wind Song). ...
