His hometown name was Yanoichi, Yaeichi, or Konoichi. He is said to have been the second son of a chief retainer of the Zeze clan in Omi. He was a disciple of Kurahashi Kengyo in Kyoto. He was summoned by Maeda Toshiyuki of the Toyama clan and recognized by the shamisen expert Shimada Kengyo. He taught Ikuta school koto music in Toyama and at his Edo residence. He was appointed as a Kengyo in 1736 (Genbun 1). He was in conflict with Yasumura Kengyo in Kyoto, who was said to be a junior disciple of Kurahashi, and composed many new kumiuta pieces.
