British zoologist. Born in the Netherlands. Dutch for Tinbergen. Studied at Leiden University and became a professor in 1947. Opposed the Nazi policies towards the Jews and was put in a concentration camp in the Netherlands. Moved to Britain in 1949 and became a professor at Oxford University in 1966. A pioneer in ethology, he excelled in experimental research and established this field together with theorist K. Lorenz. For his achievements, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1973 (shared with K. Frisch and K. Lorenz). His major works include An Investigation of Instinct (1961, 1969). In his later years, he attempted to apply ethological considerations to human behavior, which attracted attention.
