Tinbergen
British zoologist. Born in the Netherlands. Dutch for Tinbergen. Studied at Leiden University and became a professor in 1947. Opposed the Nazi policies towards the Jews and was put in a concentration camp in the Netherlands. Moved to Britain in 1949 and became a professor at Oxford University in 1966. A pioneer in ethology, he excelled in experimental research and established this field together with theorist K. Lorenz. For his achievements, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1973 (shared with K. Frisch and K. Lorenz). His major works include An Investigation of Instinct (1961, 1969). In his later years, he attempted to apply ethological considerations to human behavior, which attracted attention. His older brother was Jan Tinbergen, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences (1969).

Tinbergen

Dutch economist. A member of the Netherlands School of Economics (now Erasmus University) in Rotterdam from 1933, he was a professor there from 1955 to 1973. He was Director General of the Dutch Central Planning Agency from 1945 to 1955. He made pioneering achievements in econometric research into business cycles in the late 1930s, and later systematized economic policy theory using econometric methods. He was the first recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1969. His brother, Nikolaas Tinbergen, was an animal behaviorist.

英国の動物学者。オランダ生れ。オランダ語でティンベルヘン。ライデン大学で学び,1947年教授。ナチスのユダヤ人政策に反対し,オランダの収容所に入れられる。1949年に英国に渡り,1966年オックスフォード大学教授。動物行動学の開拓者で,実験的研究にすぐれ,理論家のK.ローレンツとともにこの分野を確立。その業績によって,1973年ノーベル生理医学賞受賞(K.フリッシュ,K.ローレンツと同時受賞)。主著に《本能の研究》(1961年,1969年)。晩年には,動物行動学的考察を人間の行動にも適用しようと試み,関心を呼んだ。ノーベル経済学賞(1969年)を受賞したヤン・ティンバーゲンは兄。

ティンバーゲン

オランダの経済学者。1933年以来ロッテルダムにあるオランダ経済学校(現エラスムス大学)に在籍,1955年−1973年まで同大学教授。1945年−1955年オランダ中央計画局長官。1930年代末に景気循環の計量経済学的研究で先駆的業績をあげ,のち計量経済学的手法により経済政策理論を体系化。1969年最初のノーベル経済学賞。なお弟のニコラース・ティンバーゲンは動物行動学者。
